My Photography

2008

I have been interested in photography from a very young age.  When I turned 12, a family friend helped cultivate that interest by generously giving me a Pentax K-1000.  From that point on, I have shot SLR cameras, and the K-1000 was a good start in learning the basics of exposure and composition.

During graduate school, I mostly shot photos related to my research.  After a few years hiatus while starting my business, I got back into photography in the summer of 2002 with the purchase of a Nikon D100.  I quickly stepped up to a D2H; however, my interests in aurora photography and astrophotography led me to experiment with a Canon 20D in late 2004, and by the spring of 2005 I moved over to Canon, purchasing my 1Ds Mark II.  I have been very pleased with the EOS system, and would highly recommend it for those interested in night photography; the low-light performance (due to low noise) of Canon’s sensors is legendary, and deservedly so.

Over the years I have sold many of my photos for scientific or nature-oriented publications.  I still sell work for commercial use.  Contact me if you are interested in purchasing or licensing some of my work.
